To estimate a living tree's age without harming it, we use the standard arboriculture formula: Diameter at Breast Height multiplied by the species' Growth Factor.
Measure the trunk circumference at 4.5 feet off the ground (chest height). This is the standard forestry measurement point known as breast height.
Divide the circumference by 3.14 (pi) to get the Diameter at Breast Height. Example: 38 inches around ÷ 3.14 = 12.1 inches DBH.
Every species has a published Growth Factor. Fast growers like Cottonwood and Silver Maple sit around 2.0–3.0; slow growers like White Oak and Shagbark Hickory run 5.0–7.5.
Estimated Age = DBH × Growth Factor. A White Oak with a 12.1-inch DBH (factor 5.0) comes out to 12.1 × 5.0 = 60.5 years old.

Important: This tool estimates age from trunk size, it does not count actual growth rings. For a precise age on a valuable or historic tree, have a certified arborist take a core sample with an increment borer.
While the formula above gives a quick approximation, counting a tree's growth rings — a science called dendrochronology — is the most precise way to determine its actual age.
In many trees, a new layer of wood forms during each growing season, producing visible growth rings made of two parts:
One light ring plus one dark ring equals one year of growth.
Dead or fallen trees (cross-section): If a tree has been cut down or fallen naturally, simply count the dark rings from the center core outward to the outer bark edge.
Standing living trees (increment borer): Arborists use a hollow steel drill bit to extract a narrow, pencil-sized cylinder of wood from the trunk to the center core, then count the rings — minimally invasive and doesn't harm the tree.
